There are many different variations on video poker, but they all operate on the same premises. In each incarnation, the player is dealt 5 cards and must get rid of the cards they deem useless in order to obtain a winning hand. The player is then dealt the same number of cards they threw out, which will determine the outcome of the round. The hands that players must obtain in order to win money are:
- Royal Flush
- Straight Flush
- Flush
- Full House
- Straight
- Four of a Kind
- Three of a Kind
- Two Pair
- One Pair
In order to secure a win while playing Video Poker, there are a few tips that players should keep in mind:
- Hold all of your Jacks, as they are very versatile cards and even potentially more valuable than Aces
- Always hold pairs, even if a higher card is presented. This increases your chances of winning, as it increases the odds of getting a three of a kind and prevents you from giving up a winning hand
- Never discard any cards if they could possibly create a paying hand. The only situation in which this is advised is when your hand has a likely possibility of becoming a Royal Flush.
